# Ask what is new

Prerequisite: an active read-capable connection and current alerts access. `get_updates` returns already-sent alerts, corrections, monitor updates, and close suggestions. Without a cursor it covers the last seven days. With a cursor it continues from the position the service issued.

Retrieval records that the updates were retrieved, but does not mark content read and does not start new editorial work. Keep `next_cursor` opaque. On `invalid_cursor`, discard it and retrieve a fresh cursor from the service.
